Darren Hayes covers Madonna

June 26, 2011 2 Comments

In case you overlooked this bit of news at the end of my post about Darren Hayes’ new single, “Talk Talk Talk,” the b-side is a cover of Madonna’s “Angel.”

Taken from 1984’s Like A Virgin and released the following spring, “Angel” is one of my favorite Madge singles of all-time. Exposed initially to the album version, my adoration of the song only grew upon exposure to the extended mix, cannily paired with the otherwise-unavailable “Into The Groove” on its flip, spurring fans like me to bring the 12″ release home. An edit of that same 12″ mix (“Madonna! Madonna! Madonna!”) served as the b-side to the “Angel” 45.

Prostrating himself at Her Madgesty’s feet once more (see below), Darren Hayes’ cover of “Angel” is largely a faithful turn, just as it should be. Still, he does spread his wings a bit, infusing the bass line with new fervency, and flying in some very “Papa Don’t Preach”-ish strings toward the end.

Having previously covered “Dress You Up” back in 2008, Hayes is clearly a Madonna acolyte. Anyone want to join me in praying he’s got a few more Queen of Pop covers on the way?
