On Thursday, Arista Records announced that Whitney Houston’s years-delayed comeback album will finally be released on September 1. No title as of yet, or word as to which writers and producers rumored to have worked with Houston have made the cut.
That same day, Evan Dando filed a lawsuit against GM, alleging unauthorized use of The Lemonheads’ “It’s A Shame About Ray” in a 2008 ad campaign. Not sure how the singer-songwriter expects the bankrupt automaker to pay up, if indeed the case is settled in his favor, but that’s probably not what’s driving the suit.
While Houston and Dando occupy drastically different places in the music stratosphere, their worlds did collide back in 1996, when The Lemonheads covered her 1986 #1 hit, “How Will I Know” for the Car Button Cloth single, “If I Could Talk I’d Tell You.” That B-side was an electric version which I don’t have just yet, though I did come across an acoustic take that Dando later recorded. He must really love him some Whitney. Hear here:
The Lemonheads went on hiatus in 1997, but reformed with a new lineup in 2005 and an eponymously titled album the next year. The band’s follow-up, Varshons, a collection of covers, is scheduled to hit stores on June 23. Head to The Lemonheads’ official site for a free download of the Townes Van Zandt-penned track, “Waiting Around To Die.”
