Soul II Soul’s “Back To Life (However Do You Want Me)” is one of my all-time favorite songs, a love I’ve previously described in detail.

So you can understand why I’m so excited about Monsieur Adi‘s new cover — erm, interpolation — of Soul II Soul’s classic track (the original acapella album version, it should be noted). Featuring London songstress A*M*E on vocals and titled “What’s Going On,” the production is rooted in a “Back To Life” remix that the French producer first shared some time ago.

Swapping Caron Wheeler’s vocals for A*M*E’s intonations (“She captured the spirit of the original”), Monsieur Adi has tightened things up considerably, adding extra oomph and sparkle. His trademark strings receive two moments in the spotlight, the classical-sounding intro (all his handiwork, he’ll have you know) and the brilliant, tension-filled midsection.
