Shakira covers The xx

October 24, 2010 1 Comment

In June, Shakira covered The xx’s “Islands” during her set at England’s annual Glastonbury festival. Now she’s followed up that favorable reception by including a studio version of the song on her new album, Sale el Sol, released this past Tuesday.

The original “Islands” is pretty spare musically, basically The xx’s stock in trade. But as one would expect from the hip-shaking Colombian, Shakira’s take is equipped with a much more pumped up rhythm. Bringing the beat to the fore moves “Islands” from a once-hushed declaration of love to a full-throated expression of deep devotion.

Whether you dig her or dislike her (I’m often back and forth myself), Shakira deserves crazy credit for being fearless in tackling these indie darlings and coming out on top. For your consideration, here’s Shakira’s performance of “Islands” at Glastonbury:

As for The xx, the band has been having a bit of fun with the media, stating they may or may not release a follow-up to their Barclaycard Mercury Prize-winning debut album.
