Los Angeles electro-pop duo DWNTWN‘s “Hungry Hearts” shares zero in common with the Bruce Springsteen classic, except for a similar title. But with Jamie Leffler, the female half of DWNTWN, recently remarking, “We take our folky songs and turn them into pop songs,” perhaps their atmopsheric tune began life closer to The Boss’ own arena rock. (Probably not.)
A welcome breather from all the bam-bam-bam blasting out there, DWNTWN’s “Hungry Hearts” is comparatively subdued, though the track’s lighter-than-air vocals are carried along by a pulsating rhythm and thick beat. Leffler and Robert Cepeda’s delicate harmonies in the chorus are particularly lovely, and the polite/formal request at the song’s heart — “I would like if you came back down” — is utterly winsome.
A few days ago, DWNTWN premiered a video for “Hungry Hearts,” directed by Jeremy Johnstone. Lensed for less than $500, the “Hungry Hearts” clip has a washed-out vintage feel that’s readymade for the Instagram generation.
Look for DWNTWN’s Midnight Ride mixtape, headed our way later this month.
