Saint Etienne’s Swinging London
February 19, 2012 1 CommentIn the running for the best single of 2012 is Saint Etienne‘s “Tonight.” Produced by Xenomania’s Tim Powell (Girls Aloud, Kylie Minogue, Sugabages) and mixed by Richard X, the song is taken from the veteran trio’s forthcoming album — their first non-compilation set in seven years — the geniusly/lazily titled Words and Music by Saint Etienne.
Saint Etienne’s Bob Stanley describes the song and the album on which it will appear thusly:
“‘Tonight’ is about the anticipation of going to see your favorite group. For some reason, I imagine this show is at the Forum in Kentish Town. The whole album is about the power of pop, how it affects and shapes your life.”
Let’s pause and reflect on that for a moment, shall we? Consider my outsize expectations fully set. Moving on…
Directed by longtime Saint Etienne associate Paul Kelly, the music video for “Tonight” perfectly captures the excitement and anticipation of a night out in the city. With shots of bustling streets, neon signs, and dazzling lights, the clip resonates whether or not you’ve ever been to swinging London Town. Trying to resist the undeniable pop pull of “Tonight” is futile, and this energetic set of visuals only makes it more so.
I prefer the mix of “Tonight” used in the video over the single version (available below), though the difference lies in the last 15 seconds or so. Hoping that fantastic finish, in which the thumping club beat doesn’t stop and Cracknell sings “Sail away…” is part of the album track.
Free download of Saint Etienne – “Tonight” via the band’s website — but hurry, because it’s down tomorrow. If you miss out, an EP with exclusive remixes and B-sides is coming soon.
