What happens after you’re part of one of the year’s biggest songs? Well, in the case of Kimbra, the featured female vocalist on Gotye’s #1 smash, “Somebody That I Used To Know,” her 2011 debut album, Vows, received a U.S. release.
Last week, the New Zealand singer-songwriter served up a companion set, Vows Remixes, which gathers new versions of seven of the album’s tracks. The eclectic collection features textures that venture beyond the kind of club beats typically expected from such a set (in fact, just two tracks could be classified as such).
The two revamps by Damian Taylor (“Two Way Street”) and Moonlight Matters (“Warrior”) that bookend Vows Remixes are my picks, but Kimbra also left off one of the best, [STRANGERS]‘ remix of “Posse.” Orchestrated by the London trio’s producer Glen Nicholls (who functions as [STRANGERS]’ fourth member behind the scenes), frontman David Maddox-Jones told me that Nicholls was inspired by Kimbra’s vocal and thought a low slung 4/4 groove would work well. Does it ever.
