Forgive me, folks, for it’s been several months since my last pop-culture confession.
How fabulous was guest judge Toni Basil on this week’s So You Think You Can Dance? The 64-year-old dance queen, most famous (or infamous) for her 1982 smash, “Mickey,” is still going strong. With a resume that ranges from movies like American Graffiti and Legally Blonde to a swinging series of Gap commercials in the late ’90s, Basil is currently the dance director and choreographer for Bette Midler’s Las Vegas romp, The Showgirl Must Go On.
In 1982, “Mickey” was inescapable, heard on radios and televisions everywhere. (Just last week, in fact, I featured Basil’s performance of her #1 smash on Solid Gold.) Repeating such chart success is rarely easy, but her label’s decision to select “Shoppin’ From A To Z” as the follow-up didn’t exactly set the stage, to say the least. There’s not much of a melody, and as the title suggests, the song is basically a recitation of a grocery-store shopping list.
Still, I bought the 45, which came wrapped in a brown paper bag-like picture sleeve. My sister and I learned all the lyrics and cheered it along, but the song spent just four weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, cashing out at #77. Not enough record-store registers were ringing up a bunch of Basil, so odds are you’re not familiar with this little gem. Listening back now, the song was a lyrical embarrassment (“D! Dog food!”), and that’s saying something for the ’80s.
The video, however, is a hoot. There’s a great moment toward the end when Basil can’t find her list. And check out those graphics!
During her SYTYCD appearance, Basil mentioned “street dancing” several times in her performance critiques. Reading her bio online, I now understand why: Basil was one of the founding members of The Lockers, and is credited with bringing that style of dance to mainstream attention. With such an impressive resume, it’s no wonder her services remain in demand decades later.
The agile Ms. Basil’s talents are on full display in her “Over My Head” video from 1984. That song made it to #81, her final chart appearance.
Perhaps not shockingly, “Shoppin’ From A To Z” has not been made available for digital download.
