One That I Turned Up

Pearl Jam has entered the Billboard Hot 100 at #56 with “The Fixer,” the driving new single from its upcoming ninth LP, Backspacer. It’s the week’s highest debut on the chart, and with 32,000 downloads tallied, “The Fixer” also marks a first-week record for the Seattle rockers.

Out September 20th, Backspacer is said to be an uptempo record with pop and New Wave elements, with Brendan O’Brien returning as Pearl Jam’s producer for the first time since 1998’s Yield. If “The Fixer” is an indication of what’s to come, then I’m happy to hear the band has pumped up the positivity, because one of my top PJ tunes is “Wishlist,” a hopeful little song from Yield that made it to #6 on both the Modern Rock and Mainstream Rock charts, and reached #47 on the Hot 100.

All right there in the title (an aural WYSIWYG), “Wishlist” is an optimistic stream of consciousness strung together by vocalist Eddie Vedder, who eventually edited his original 8-minute-long composition down to a more radio-friendly three and a half minutes:
