From loving arms to battered feet

Like her sisters-in-dance Ultra Naté, Kristine W, and Crystal Waters, all of whom also debuted under the disco lights during the ’90s, Billie Ray Martin has returned to clubland often in the decades since. The German artist’s first solo entry, 1995’s “Your Loving Arms” — “Burning inside, yeah, I’m burning inside” — brilliantly showcased Martin’s versatility as a smoky-voiced singer and wailing soul diva, hitting #1 on the Billboard Dance chart. “Your Loving Arms” remains an absolute classic.

Martin’s latest trip to the dancefloor is “Sweet Suburban Disco,” an electronic ode to a beat-loving lady (“Never the greatest dancer around”) who can’t resist hitting the club, crushed toes and countless blisters be damned. In addition to Martin’s original minimalist production (don’t dismiss it outright, it’s a grower), the “Sweet Suburban Disco” single includes mixes from Severino, Ray Grant, and Luke Solomon. But the pulsating rework courtesy of Erasure’s Vince Clarke (recently in the studio with Frankmusik) is my pick of the pack:
