A new mix of a classic tune is sure to get your 4th of July barbecue bumpin’.
Aretha Franklin’s “Think,” first released in 1968, has been reworked by Dutch production trio Kraak & Smaak. Not a duo as their moniker suggests, Oscar de Jong, Mark Kneppers, and Wim Plug have done official remixes for Moby, Sam Sparro, Jamiroquai, Bitter:Sweet, and others. Kraak & Smaak’s latest album, Electric Hustle, came out in April.
Too often when super-old songs are newly recast for the club, cranking up the BPMs results in a big ol’ mess. My music collection even counts a late ’90s mix of Aretha’s “Respect” by Jonathan Peters that was particularly tragic. I’m particularly protective of “Think” (see below), but I’m pleased to report that Kraak & Smaak haven’t sullied the Queen of Soul’s legacy with this latest re-do.

In my previous agency life, I had pitched “Think” for a television commercial I was working on, well before Big Lots (and at least one step above that brand). Things didn’t pan out in the end for my project, but seeing the discount retailer’s spots, I can’t help but feel vindicated by my assertion that we easily could have, in fact, secured rights to use “Think,” though hearing the feminist anthem in that context is a bit of a odd recast itself.
