Last heard joining Rye Rye on a revamp of the 21 Jump Street theme, Esthero served up a new solo single this week. New music from the Canadian singer-songwriter has been a long time coming.
“Never Let You Go” previews Everything Is Expensive, Esthero’s first full-length since 2005’s Wikked Lil’ Girls. After that sophomore album failed to meet expectations, the L.A.-based artist found herself in a self-described state of limbo, feeling tired and uninspired. Eventually she made her way back to music, not only crafting the tunes that would eventually comprise Everything Is Expensive, but also helping to shape songs for the likes of Kanye West (“Love Lockdown”), Brandy, and Timbaland.
In its original form, “Never Let You Go” is a swingin’, finger-snappin’ track, with piano underlining an assertive performance from Esthero that details the lengths she’ll go to hold on to her guy, however unfaithful he might be. Mixing organic sounds with electro for a super-hooky single, “Never Let You Go” might (finally) catapult Esthero into the mainstream if the song gets a fair shake.
Not forgetting her past successes with club remixes of “O.G. Bitch” (#1) and “Fastlane” (#5), Esthero delivers for the dance floor on the “Never Gonna Let You Go” single release.
Remixes (all edits, unfortunately) come from Cajjmere Wray, Russell “Chuck” Morgan, Studio Matt, and Awesome vs. Procon. Preview the first two below, and hope along with me that full versions are forthcoming.
