This week, Lady Gaga issued a second set of “Born This Way” remixes featuring productions by Michael Woods, Dada Life, Zedd, Grum, Bimbo Jones, and Twin Shadow. Those six join the three included on part one from LA Riots, Chew Fu, and DJ White Shadow, plus the Starsmith remix available exclusively on iTunes’ Songs For Japan charity compilation.
The standout mix among the six on “Born This Way” Pt. 2 is the one that Brooklyn’s Twin Shadow turned in. Removing everything but Gaga’s vocal from the original track, George Lewis Jr. has totally reimagined the tune, creating a fresh and funky bump-and-grind from the ground up. It’s flat-out brilliant.
Now you’ll recall that Gaga caught some flack over “Born This Way” sounding a lot like Madonna’s “Express Yourself.” Well, Lewis’ re-do kicks off by echoing the start of one of Ms. Ciccone’s earliest hits, “Borderline.” Stay tuned, and you’ll likely notice the whole production is a mix-and-match of ’80s pop. Guitars recall Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time” (shimmering in the chorus) and Purple Rain-era Prince (midway through), while strings seemingly plucked from Scritti Politti’s “Perfect Way” appear toward the end.
Given that headstart, help me sleuth out the rest of Lewis’ references, though likely only the Twin Shadow knows what retro inspiration is really lurking in the mix.
