With overtly sexual lyrics part of mainstream music these days (Rihanna’s “S&M” and Enrique Iglesias’ “Tonight I’m F***king You” immediately come to mind), many complemented with near-naked visuals splayed out for all to see, there are times when today’s pop seems to be nothing more than a tamer type of porn. (And I realize just how old I must sound to have typed that intro out.)
So it makes sense, in a way, that Traci Lords, who became famous for starring in adult films (underage, as it was later revealed), has picked this particular moment in pop culture history to return to music. You may recall that in 1995, Lords released 1000 Fires, a techno-dance album that birthed two Billboard Dance chart hits, “Control” (#2) and “Fallen Angel” (#11).
Lords has put out a single or two since then (while continuing to act in television and film), but new track, “Last Drag,” finally takes her back to the dance floor. Produced by Anton Bass and Konrad Carelli, and mixed by Grammy winning engineer Tom Lord-Alge (who also serves as the project’s executive producer), “Last Drag” isn’t about a female impersonator hanging up his/her heels (my first thought), but a bad relationship metaphorically likened to nicotine addiction.
The original mix is super-catchy, but it’s Razor N Guido’s stellar re-do that has me completely addicted to Lords’ “Last Drag.” Hear here:
