Track of the Moment

Blood-Red Sky

Sky Ferreira debuted a new song, “Red Lips,” a couple of weeks ago via a creepy music video directed by shock-and-auteur photographer Terry Richardson. But since I was traveling out of town with some truly weak Wi-Fi access, I missed featuring it. Today, however, the single landed on at least one download service.

“Red Lips” was co-written by Ferreira and Garbage’s Shirley Manson, who has taken the 19-year-old singer under her protective wing. Greg Kurstin, with whom Manson worked on her ultimately aborted solo album, produced the track. “Red Lips” is unmistakably smeared with Manson’s influence.

Unfortunately, Ferreira’s co-star for the “Red Lips” video is not her flame-haired Scottish angel (which really would have been something), but a rather large, fuzzy tarantula. And speaking of smeared, it’s lipstick not facestick, Sky.

After so many fits and starts from Ferreira (including her fantastic, criminally overlooked As If! EP), I doubt this official introduction to her new musical phase is the way to get the kind of attention her talent warrants.

Regarding Ferreira’s As If! EP, it’s been disappeared from download services. The lyric videos also appear to have been scrubbed from YouTube.
