Rihanna’s Sparkling New Single

September 26, 2012 2 Comments

It was a year ago and a few days’ change that we first heard Rihanna intone, “Yellow diamonds in the light,” at the start of “We Found Love.” Now the Barbadian superstar has a whole song titled after the precious stones.

Whether “Diamonds,” the first single from Rihanna’s upcoming seventh (!) studio album, will match the 10-week run at #1 that “We Found Love” enjoyed will be determined by any number of factors. While not a club banger like her Calvin Harris-assisted hit, the midtempo “Diamonds” is certainly accompanied by a flawless pop pedigree. Lyrics and melody leapt from the brain of Sia, while the song’s production was handled by Benny Blanco (Maroon 5, Katy Perry) and returning champions Stargate, the Norwegian team that has helmed eight of Rihanna’s top 10 hits, including four number-ones.

Rihanna sounds so much like Sia on the single that she must really have been wedded to the “Diamonds” demo. Maybe that’s why Rihanna referred to the Aussie singer-songwriter as “my wife” on Twitter last night.

In addition to “Diamonds,” the other song titles from Rihanna’s new album appear to be embedded in the “7” logo found on her new site, if you’d like to put on your Sherlock hat and look past all the “Navy” references.
