Unless this is the only site you frequent for your music fix (and if it is, many thanks), you might have heard last week that Norwegian trio Blackroom have a new single, “Control.” Maybe you even gave the song a spin, and found it a worthy successor to “What Is It That You Want,” pimped in this space back in March.
But it was only today that Blackroom made “Control” available for download, freeing me to remove a personal embargo on the track. There’s an umistakable Pet Shop Boys influence at play here, while the opening synths are reminiscent of Eurythmics’ “Here Comes The Rain Again.” Blackroom also do their part to bring back the sax on “Control,” once omnipresent in ’80s music, allowing the instrument to surface in the mix now and again (Lady Gaga also fancies a bit of sax on her new album). But like “What Is It That You Want,” what makes “Control” so captivating (and makes the track more than the sum of its influences) is Ole Gundersen’s emotionally connected vocal performance.
Blackroom have released “Control” in two forms. The 2-track single features the edit and the dubby Ciscoe Remix, while the Control EP includes two different takes on the song, the Rubits vs. Eddie Da Bass Club Mix and this classic ’80s Extended Version (I dig the disco-claps):
The 4-track Control EP also features “The Jam,” a wordless number written for Blackroom’s live shows that marries early ’90s rave with Cure-like guitar, and the portentously hushed “Sharks.” All of that tuneage should be enough to tide you over until Blackroom’s album finally develops.
Purchase Blackroom – “Control” via iTunes (single, EP).
