After one of the longest waits in recent memory, Hercules And Love Affair‘s Blue Songs was finally released in the U.S. today. The band’s follow-up to its 2008 self-titled debut was issued in the UK on January 31, and in Australia on February 18. The delay of Blue Songs‘ stateside arrival is even odder considering the group is New York-based.
Even Hercules And Love Affair founder/frontman Andy Butler agrees. “It’s a frustrating situation,” he told Billboard. “In some ways my management was just way too U.K.- and Euro-centric. It’s lame in some ways because all of our fans have heard it, you know?”
However, there is some reward for fans who patiently awaited the release of Blue Songs here. Three tracks, including a cover of The xx’s “Shelter,” have been added to the album, plus seven bonus remixes for “My House” and “Painted Eyes.” And if you purchase Blue Songs via iTunes, you’ll get two additional mixes of “Falling.”
“My House” is/was the first single from Blue Songs, so you may have seen the music video elsewhere — it is seven months old, after all — but the clip is worth rediscovering. Matching the track’s brilliantly recreated old-school house vibe, it plays like a newly unearthed VHS cassette of a long forgotten TV dance-party show. The clothing is spot-on, as are the primitive graphics and editing effects, with the music even pausing for a commercial break.
