Kylie turns back the ‘Hands’ of time

Aphrodite, the current album from pop icon Kylie Minogue already has something of an ’80s bent to it, a forthright embrace of synths and other retro touches that I’ll attribute to executive producer Stuart Price.

Now things have come full circle, as Kylie’s commissioned a remix of Aphrodite standout “Put Your Hands Up (If You Feel Love)” from Pete Hammond, a man intimately familiar with the sounds of the decade’s second half. As engineer for the massively successful UK songwriting/production team of Stock Aitken Waterman, Hammond was instrumental in shaping the classic SAW sound, including Kylie’s run of hits from the era (“I Should Be So Lucky,” et al). On the PWL label’s releases, he was always credited as “Mixmaster.”

For “Put Your Hands Up,” Hammond returns to his Mixmaster role as if he’d never left, combining relentless sequencers, string swells, percussive punctuation, and loads of vocal repetition. The result is all so wonderfully SAW-meets-modern-day-Minogue. Affectionately (and accurately) describing Hammond’s remix of “Put Your Hands Up” as “80’s-tastic,” Kylie has created a lyrics video to match, a thank-you to fans who’ve come out to see her Aphrodite Les Folies tour. (My chance arrives in May.)

Though the Pete Hammond remix of “Put Your Hands Up (If You Feel Love)” isn’t available (soon, hopefully), the Aphrodite version is none too shabby a substitute. Pick up the original track via iTunes, Amazon MP3.
