Yes, as much as it continues to pain me, I’m a Ke$ha convert, a bit tardy to her whiskey-soaked, glitter-bomb party. Though I wouldn’t go as far as to call Ke$ha a genius, she has been smart enough to carve out a niche unto herself in today’s crowded pop marketplace. (Said niche may reside near the overflowing dumpster in the rat-infested alley behind a notorious dive bar, but it’s a niche nonetheless.)
“Blow,” the second single to be pulled from Cannibal, the companion EP to her debut album, Animal, could have been just another entry in Ke$ha’s unending parade of paeans to partying (see “Tik Tok,” “Take It Off”). And lyrically, it is. But with several variation-on-a-theme videos already under her thrift-store belt (see “Tik Tok,” “Take It Off,” “We R Who We R,”), Ke$ha eschews the club for this unexpected clip.
Well, there’s still a party in the “Blow” video, but it’s vastly subdued affair — there’s Muenster cheese! — with the only revelers in attendance Ke$ha, James Van Der Beek of Dawson’s Creek, and some dressed-to-the-nines unicorns (’cause that’s how unicorns roll). Things are quiet until bras are removed, laser guns are drawn, and those unicorn-partygoers become collateral damage. While their demise results in many rainbows, this isn’t the LGBT lovefest Lady Gaga will likely serve up when her “Born This Way” video premieres on Monday, but Ke$ha could be flirting with having the second video to warrant an epilepsy warning this week.
Did Funny Or Die have anything to do with the “Blow” video’s odd coupling? The comedy site explained the story of the $ in Ke$ha’s name and cast her as a foul-mouthed Disney princess, while Van Der Beek’s been tweaking Dawson (when he’s not showing off his DILF khakis).
