Joe Jonas’ Justin Love

Purely for mildly pervy reasons, I want Joe Jonas’ solo career to happen. Actually, anyone with eyes should find little objection to seeing more of the 22-year-old singer around.

I do have some standards, however. I couldn’t look past Chris Brown’s contributions to Jonas’ previous single, “See No More” (co-writer and backing vocals), released in June, though I might have if it had been a better tune. I was not alone in one or both of those assessments, since “See No More” barely breached the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at a disappointing #92.

But new single, “Just In Love,” is out today, and Jonas’ second at-bat has got a great swing. It doesn’t hurt that the cowbell sound takes me back to Jade’s still-brilliant “Don’t Walk Away,” but it’s the swarthy Jonas’ vocals, all warm and soulful, that have me reaching for repeat. If “Just In Love” is a little reminicent of Justin Timberlake (and it is), credit James Fauntleroy and Rob Knox of production team The Y’s, which officially counts the Emmy-award winning actor as its third member. I’m gonna call this one “Justin Love” from now on.

The music video for “Justin Love” (I wasn’t kidding) was filmed in Paris. A quick dip in the bathtub is involved, and some brief bedroom romping too, so, of course, Joe doffs his shirt. For “the art.”

Joe Jonas’ debut album, Fastlife, is out October 11.
