Solange (aka Beyoncé’s more interesting little sister, for the uninitiated) has returned with a new single, “Losing You.” It’s her first solo material since 2008’s soul/disco retrofest, Sol-Angel And The Hadley St. Dreams.
Co-written and produced by Devonté Hynes (aka Blood Orange), “Losing You” floats along like the sweetest ’80s dream, even as Solange wrestles with a troubled relationship. Somehow the pair has created the missing link between Janet Jackson’s “Alright” and “Again” — tip of the fedora hat to Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis — with the midtempo “Losing You.”
The music video for “Losing You” was shot in Cape Town, South Africa, and directed by Melina Matsoukas (Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez). Solange, of course, looks nothing short of gorgeous (the brick-print suit is particularly fantastic), though I would not have recommended that she recline upon a stack of old mattresses.
The B-side to “Losing You” is a funkier affair called “Sleep In The Park,” featuring Of Montreal’s Kevin Barnes. The pair previously collaborated on “Sex Karma,” from his band’s 2010 album, False Priest.
