The countdown to Coldplay‘s Mylo Xyloto continues, as today the band released “Paradise,” the second single from their forthcoming fifth album, produced by Brian Eno.
“Paradise” is a moody mid-tempo track full of instrumental flourishes, including string swells, organ bits, and briefly menacing electric guitar. While more grounded than previous single “Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall,” together the two songs make a solid case that the Coldplay fellas have had their ears fixed on pop radio.
Both adopt the format’s current love of syllabic repetition as practiced by Katy Perry, Ke$ha, and Britney Spears, all via producer Dr. Luke. First, we got “Wa, wa, wa, wa, waterfall,” and now “Para, para, paradise.” Then there’s the dragging beat of “Paradise,” which sounds plucked from Ryan Tedder’s production work. With Coldplay also announcing today that Barbadian pop princess Rihanna guests on Mylo Xyloto, the set is shaping up to be a different sort of album from the band than what’s come before.
That’s not to say “Paradise” doesn’t sound like Coldplay, because it does. But it’s clear that Chris Martin & Co. are coloring their latest group of tunes with some less-expected hues. Hear here:
Coldplay’s Mylo Xyloto is out October 24.
