Happy Endings

When a relationship ends, you’ve got two choices, musically. First, surrender to the pain by putting on something fittingly down — ‘mope and moan’ tunes, you might call them. (Adele would be an excellent choice, if you’re so inclined, as both 19 and 21 were borne out of heartbreak.) Alternately, if you’ve accepted that your life is already markedly improved without the presence of whomever you were attached to, you might choose something suitably assertive of your newfound independence — ‘moving on’ tunes.

A fantastic new addition to the post-breakup playlist of the latter type comes from London male-female duo Summer Camp. In “Better Off Without You,” Elizabeth Sankey directly addresses her former better half, leaving no doubt as to her feelings about their split. The instantly catchy ’80s-ish synth sound is just the cherry on Summer Camp’s see-you-later sundae, an appreciation for the John Hughes era that’s further evidenced by the single’s prom-tastic cover art.

The “Better Off Without You” video, however, travels back one decade earlier for its inspiration:

“Better Off Without You” is the first single from Summer Camp’s debut album, Welcome To Condale, out November 8 via Moshi Moshi.
