After Adele performed “Someone Like You” at the BRIT Awards back in February, the solo piano ballad shot to #1 on the UK Singles Chart. Last month, after performing the standout 21 track at the VMAs, “Someone Like You” leapt from #19 to the top of the Billboard Hot 100, with Adele collecting next-day raves for her turn in the MTV award-show spotlight just as she had at the BRITs six months earlier.
Having already notched her second #1 both here and abroad without a music video for “Someone Like You,” I wasn’t alone in assuming that those two performances would have to suffice (or this intimate at-home take) for those looking for visual accompaniment. But with the song at #2 for a third consecutive week and radio airplay increasing, today brought the debut of a proper video for “Someone Like You,” and a properly wistful one at that.
Directed by Jake Nava (Leona Lewis, Beyoncé, Britney Spears), the black-and-white clip was lensed in Paris during some very early hours of daylight. Adele walks the deserted streets of one of the world’s most romantic cities alone, occasionally lipsyncing and ultimately watching a man walk away from her with his coat-collar upturned. Heartbreaking bastard:
