Adele traversed the deserted streets of Paris in her music video for “Someone Like You,” and now Jonathan Pierce of Brooklyn’s The Drums crosses the pond to take a similarly reflective stroll through her London environs in his band’s new clip, “How It Ended.” Like Adele, Pierce also selectively lip syncs along the way.
“How It Ended” is the second single and closing track from The Drums’ sophomore album, Portamento, released in September. The gloomier affair largely casts off the upbeat ’60s surf rock influences of The Drums’ self-titled debut, leaving mostly cloudy-skies synth work in their wake (vestiges of Joy Division, most obviously).
Before you attempt to adjust your screen while watching the “How It Ended” video, it’s just a filter meant to conjure up the canvas texture of an oil painting, says director Patrick Roberts.
“We wanted to convey a tone of recollection, memory, and longing. While the lyrical content could refer to a person, we wanted to play with the idea that it could also refer to a place,” Roberts told SPIN. “We chose to keep the images within a specific color palette, in order to heighten the sense and theme of memory. Memories are often tinted or abstracted, so we also texturized the images. We chose to incorporate figures that were ghostly, painterly, and saturated in color. We wanted a video that retained a sense of human touch. Something visceral and intimate.”
