Recently touring in Australia to support her sophomore album, Wounded Rhymes, Lykke Li stopped by Triple J radio and performed a cover of “Unchained Melody.”
While The Righteous Brothers’ 1964 hit version (produced by Phil Spector) was used to memorable effect in the 1990 blockbuster, Ghost, amazingly Li manages to strip away much of the association with spinning clay.
Backed only by an acoustic guitar and a couple of male singers, Li mentions 1950s singing trio The Fleetwoods as inspiration for her cover after the radio hosts suggest The Righteous Brothers and Gareth Gates. Another reason Li’s achingly spare take shakes off any traces of Ghost? Asked if she likes the movie, the Swedish singer-songwriter responded with a simple, “No.”
