Though The xx has just a single album to their credit thus far, the English indie pop trio has inspired a boatload of covers from famous fans (Shakira, OMD, and Hercules And Love Affair, to name three).
A while back, The xx had sought to commission covers of songs off their 2009 debut from their favorite artists and issue a compilation of the results. The band eventually nixed that plan, but not before these diehard Everything But The Girl fans had reached out to Tracey Thorn and her former bandmate (and still husband) Ben Watt. Thorn selected “Night Time” as the tune she’d like to sing, and headed into the studio with Watt and her current production collaborator, Ewan Pearson.
“As Tracey re-articulates Romy’s lyrics, Ben fluidly arpeggiates the original interwoven guitar lines into one seamless pass, while Ewan adds crisp fresh half-tempo drums, atmospheric misty synths and booming bass,” reads the PR for Thorn’s Night Time EP, which also sports remixes of her own track, “Swimming.” (I figured it best to repeat the adjective-specific description verbatim, as my own aural assessment would only pale in comparison.)
Though “Night Time” marks the first time Thorn and Watt have played together on a recording in over 10 years, please don’t call it an EBTG reunion. But, as one would expect of such a re-pairing, “Night Time” is nothing short of fantastic. Hear here:

Brooklyn trio The Antlers are the latest to tackle a track from The xx, hitting record on “VCR.” Like Tracey Thorn’s cover, their take also makes the cut for a new EP, titled (together), out on Tuesday. That 8-track set also includes collaborations with Nicole Atkins, Bear In Heaven, and Neon Indian, plus a couple of remixes.
Take a listen to The Antlers’ dreamy, buzzing cover of “VCR,” which features a fantastic drum loop, below:

After previously refusing to commit to recording a second album, The xx announced earlier this month that they’d decamped to the studio, and are documenting the process via a new blog. Good news for fans, famous and otherwise, since the new set should effectively double the material available for future covers.
