Turn It Up

Prince Back 2 ‘Dance 4 Me’

I don’t know what’s gotten into Prince lately — I suspect he’s on top of the world from the universal praise he’s earned for his current Welcome 2… tour, now in Canada — but a couple of weeks after serving up “Extraloveable”, a track originating from 1982, the Purple One has dug into the archives once again. However, since this is Prince, it’s never as simple as that.

This time, it’s a set of remixes for “Dance 4 Me,” a funky standout from MPLSºUND, part of Prince’s 3-disc LOtUSFLOW3R sold exclusively at Target in 2009. The David Alexander Icon Remix was released later that year, though two other known-to-exist club takes, the Dominatrix Mix and Tribal Drum Mix, went unissued. Last Friday, however, those three were joined by two new takes on “Dance 4 Me,” the Jamie Lewis Revamped Purple Mix and the Brian Matrix Da Big Room Mix, all released via Swiss-based house music label, Purple Music (run by Lewis, it should be noted).

While “Dance 4 Me” isn’t exactly new, built-from-the-ground-up Prince — and even less so than “Extraloveable” — his voice has been absent from clubland for far too long. Offering something for different DJ tastes, these remixes of “Dance 4 Me” could go a long way to painting the dancefloor purple once again.

Prince brings his Welcome 2 Canada tour to Edmonton tomorrow, then visits Calgary and Vancouver before wrapping up in Victoria, British Columbia on Saturday. If you can swing a ticket, his show is so worth seeing.
