Kelly Clarkson’s Flash Dance

If there’s one thing Kelly Clarkson videos aren’t known for, it’s choreography. Though she’s had songs you can’t help but move to, fancy footwork just isn’t the oft-barefoot singer’s thing. She’s never pretended to aspire to Beyoncé-level dance routines.

Well, in Clarkson’s new video for her best single in years, “What Doesn’t Kill You (Stronger),” all that changes — sort of. Last month, she put out a call on her website for fans to be part of her “global flash mob,” enlisting them to learn some steps to the song and “record you and your friends rocking these moves in a unique location that shows where you are in the world.”

Those submissions form the heart of the clip for “What Doesn’t Kill You (Stronger),” which casts Clarkson in the role of editor, reviewing tape of folks dancing near the ocean, at a bus stop, in parking lots, even underwater. Though I thought she’d smartly passed on doing any moving herself, it turns out the best has been saved for last. Clarkson leads a large mob in the choreography, including members of her backing band, and clearly has a total kick while doing it. Dancing’s fun, y’all!

Clarkson’s cover of the holiday classic, “I’ll Be Home For Christmas,” is out now. The song will also be included on her 9-track iTunes Sessions EP, out December 27.
