The Limousines cover Paul Simon

January 15, 2012 0 Comments

San Francisco duo The Limousines have one final hometown gig this Thursday before heading out on a lengthy European tour, opening for The Sounds. But prior to packing their gear and getting passports stamped, Eric Victorino and Giovanni Giusti have paid a visit to Graceland, covering Paul Simon’s “You Can Call Me Al.”

The “Internet Killed The Video Star” stars take Simon’s 1986 already synth-infused single, refreshing all of the original’s best bits (including the forwards-then-backwards bass break), but give “You Can Call Me Al” a prominent bump that the veteran singer-songwriter probably never imagined it might have. With four on the floor as the guide, The Limousines’ cover is on one smooth ride. Keep disco dancing, kids:

As a related aside, I prefer Paul Simon’s Rhythm Of The Saints over Graceland, in no small part due to the percussive brilliance of its lead track. Graceland ranks a worthy second, however, and it’s obviously none too shabby of an album. Simon’s 1986 Grammy win for the set, and the fact that it continues to accumulate accolades over 20 years later, including being added to the National Recording Registry, attest to the cultural impact it made.
