If you follow these sorts of things (read: a chart geek, like me), then you’re aware that Katy Perry is hoping to score a sixth #1 hit from Teenage Dream on the Billboard Hot 100 with current single, “The One That Got Away.”
Last August, Perry tied Michael Jackson’s record for five number-ones from the same album. The King of Pop’s quintet were all taken from Bad, with a span that ran from 1987-88: “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You,” “Bad,” “The Way You Make Me Feel,” “Man in the Mirror,” and “Dirty Diana.”
Currently, Katy Perry sits at #6 with “The One That Got Away,” having fallen from her #3 perch the week prior. Rihanna and Calvin Harris reclaimed the top spot with “We Found Love” from LMFAO’s “Sexy And I Know It” (for a total of nine weeks), and with Bruno Mars, Adele, and Flo-Rida advancing on the throne, Perry has now released a new version of “The One That Got Away,” which could propel her to the penthouse.
Billboard chart rules allow all versions of a song to impact its performance tally, and in recent months we’ve seen several artists release “remixes” featuring guests to reignite radio interest and download sales (Rihanna, Britney, even Cee Lo Green). Perry’s done this with previous singles “E.T.,” bringing Kanye West aboard, and “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.),” on which Missy Elliot briefly emerged. Just a few weeks ago, in December, Perry followed a similar formula, releasing a remix of “The One That Got Away” that wedged in a bit of B.o.B.
Today there’s a third version of “The One That Got Away” available for download, though this time Perry didn’t procure some hip-hop help. Rather, the song has been stripped down for an acoustic take, produced by Jon Brion (Fiona Apple, Aimee Mann, Kanye West). Brion supports Perry’s strong vocal performance with a great production that’s a little like Buddy Holly’s “Everyday,” though it’s understandably more love-lost than love-struck:
Of course, with such strong pop competition, there’s no guarantee that this acoustic take on “The One That Got Away” will secure Perry that sixth #1 from Teenage Dream. She did just announce a collaborative partnership with The Sims, so perhaps she can grab the record in an alternate reality.
