Track of the Moment

Come See About Nneka

Up until now, Nneka hasn’t been on my radar. But the Nigerian-German songstress’ new single, “My Home,” (released in mid-December) has me hitting repeat.

About the song, Nneka says, “It’s about your quest, searching for a place in life to feel comfortable, and not knowing where to go. And, in the end, realizing there is actually no peace on Earth until you accept that both bad and good are part of life. There is never total happiness, only a search for a healthy equilibrium between two extremes.”

Amazingly, the track’s Motown backbeat somehow perfectly syncs with Nneka’s lyrics about self-determination in the face of personal pain and rejection. The whole thing swings.

“My Home” starts off slowly but stick with it. When the drums kick in at :40, you’ll know why I’m so enamoured with Nneka. At the moment, “My Home” is my beginning, my middle, my end:

“My Home” is the first single from Nneka’s third album, Soul Is Heavy, out February 28. She tours the U.S. and Canada in March.
