School Of Seven Bells’ Haunting House Party

Down to a duo since the departure of twin sister Claudia Deheza in late 2010, Alejandra Deheza and Benajmin Curtis are soldiering on as School Of Seven Bells.

The New York dream-pop band, whose sound I describe as ‘Cocteau Twins meets The Cure on the dancefloor,’ released Ghostory on February 28. Curtis describes the set as a concept album from the perspective of Lafaye, a fictional female character concocted by Deheza. “Each one of these songs is really a conversation that she’s having with another perspective, another event in her life. They’re all inside her head,” he told Spinner.

As all of Ghostory flows from Lafaye’s POV, it’s fitting that “Lafaye” (the song) is the first to be feted with a music video. However, I doubt the house party featured in the clip, directed by not-Cracker David Lowery and Toby Halbrook, is the kind you’d want an invite for.

Eerie vibe aside, I might not pass up a closer inspection of the living room’s gorgeous flagstone fireplace. So very mid-century modern.

School Of Seven Bells turned over Ghostory‘s lead track, “The Night” to Rewards (Aaron Pfenning, ex-Chairlift) for a remix. Download his seven-minute, slice-and-dice dance stormer (plus the original album version) via Stereogum.
