Madonna has debuted the music video to “Girl Gone Wild,” the second single from MDNA, out on Tuesday.
Directed by fashion photographers Mert & Marcus — also behind the promo pics for the album campaign — “Girl Gone Wild” features several button-pushing scenes reminiscent of classic Madonna: the religious imagery of “Like A Prayer,” the same-sex and gender-bending shock of “Justify My Love,” the cigarette-smoking Dita of “Erotica,” the leather, latex, and chains of “Human Nature,” and even a flash of “Ray Of Light”-era ecstasy. Lensed in gorgeous black and white like “Vogue,” there’s some actual voguing, too.
In many ways, “Girl Gone Wild” is like Madonna’s Sex book come to life, nearly two decades later. The clip is easily Madonna’s best stylized (read: non-narrative) video in years, perhaps since “Nothing Really Matters.”
