Sneaky Sound System’s Insistent New Single

March 26, 2012 0 Comments

Sneaky Sound System’s third album, From Here To Anywhere, was definitely a highlight of 2011. While singles “We Love” and “Big” predated its release, the Aussie duo is giving the set’s third single, “Really Want To See You Again,” a big push in 2012.

“Really Want To See You Again” is one of the best sides Sneaky Sound System has delivered, with an insistent beat, lite-rave synths, and some fantastic vocals by Connie Mitchell (shades of Shannon in the pleading chorus and Neneh Cherry in the talk-rap verses). While there’s plenty for ears to devour, there’s also a music video designed to keep eyeballs entertained, directed by Price James (Beth Ditto’s “I Wrote The Book,”).

With Sneaky Sound Systems’ Black Angus on keys and Mitchell flanked by two backup dancers fully committed to the choreography, the clip is straight out of the early ’90s (a period that director James appears to have some affinity for). To my record-collector eyes, the graphic look recalls the primary-colored cubes once decorating singles released by the Manhattan label.

Remixes by Azari & III, KiNK, and Jam X-Press are out today, but “Really Want To See You Again” is really screaming for a full-on freestyle rework. Not only because Mitchell sounds like Shannon on the track, but I also recently rediscovered my love for this track and the two are blending quite wonderfully in my head.

Until Sneaky Sound System makes my old-school-meets-new dream come true, Azari & III’s remix comes closest to recapturing the freestyle vibe that’s the object of my desire.
