I didn’t know that [STRANGERS] were such fans of director David Lynch. The revelation, which makes me love the UK dark-pop trio even more, arrives with the debut of the music video for their gorgeous new single, “Shine On You.”
“The video for ‘Shine On You’ came from our love for David Lynch films and the way he creates that uncomfortable feeling in his movies, specifically the way he plays around with the subconscious to mystify his audience,” [STRANGERS] says. “We were aiming for the same effect. There is a certain awkwardness surrounding the girl. We wanted to provoke our audience to ask questions.”
Filmed by Tom Doran in an abandoned power station, the clip takes inspiration from Lynch’s cult TV series Twin Peaks, specifically the scenes set in The Black Lodge. [STRANGERS] frontman David Maddox-Jones’ red jacket, like that worn by The Man From Another Place, is one obvious nod (though I imagine Maddox-Jones is much taller).
Let the awkward dancing commence!
“Shine On You” is out today, accompanied by the Draper Remix which takes the song into dubstep territory (or ‘LiquidStep,’ as the fellow UK-er calls his craft). Brooklyn’s Sensual Harassment has also remixed “Shine On You,” offered as a free download.
On April 21, [STRANGERS] will release a special 7″ of “Shine On You” for Record Store Day, available exclusively from Rough Trade East in London. Each copy of the limited-edition run features different handmade artwork on the sleeve and a Royal Scams remix of “Shine on You” on the B-side. Order here, if you like.
