Lost In ‘New York’

Snow Patrol is the band that I fell for at 30,000 feet, returning from Orlando to Chicago on a late-night flight in early 2005. Hitting shuffle on my iPod, “Chocolate,” came on, a perfect example of music meeting a moment. I will forever associate the UK group with that memory, particularly as I kept the song on repeat as we began our descent into the Windy City.

Others no doubt arrived at Snow Patrol fandom via Grey’s Anatomy, as several of their tunes have soundtracked the long-running series. Most recently, “New York,” a track from the band’s current album, Fallen Empires, wrapped an episode this past January.

While that on-screen moment will forever be cemented in many viewers’ minds, I’ve never tuned in to see McDreamy and McSteamy in action, so I’ll be making my “New York” connection via Snow Patrol’s new music video.

Singer Gary Lightbody is a man alone in a crowded bar, lost in his thoughts, in the clip for “New York.” The setup strikes the exact right tone for the plaintive ballad, a song fervently imbued with the kind of longing borne of being separated from the one you love. Music meeting a moment. Come on, come out, come here, come here.
