Kindness’ cover of The Replacements’ “Swinging Party” (from 1985’s Tim) isn’t new. It first surfaced in October 2009, one of several songs posted on MySpace with little information about who was behind them.
Eventually it was revealed that Kindness is the alter ego of UK producer Adam Bainbridge. Nearly three years later, his debut album, World, You Need A Change Of Mind, has arrived, and “Swinging Party” is one of the early tracks that made the cut.
The Replacements’ original was imbued with aching, personal despair — Paul Westerberg had another, less obvious meaning of “Swinging Party” in mind. Bainbridge doesn’t sound as broken on Kindness’ cover (the lampshade mentioned is perhaps more literal and less metaphorical), giving the song a removed, Talking Heads-style disco makeover. You can dance, for resignation.
