Track of the Moment

Tomorrow’s Sound Today

Niki & The Dove released their long-awaited debut, Instinct, this past week in the UK, but — broken record alert — the album won’t arrive here via iTunes until June 12. CD and vinyl fans have an even longer wait in store, August 7.

Venerable indie label Sub Pop, who signed the Swedish duo to North America, has appended two bonus tracks to Instinct (“The Beach,” “All This Youth”). Pre-orders of the physical release also include a Niki & The Dove tote bag and a MP3 download code for the album on June 12.

After falling for Malin Dahlström and Gustaf Karlöf’s dark-tinged atmospheric pop via songs like “The Fox,” “The Drummer,” “Winterheart,” and “Mother Protect” (all free MP3s at one point) — plus the truly brilliant “DJ Ease My Mind,” first released in 2010 — my anticipation has only grown for what I haven’t yet heard from Niki & The Dove. By my count, that’s a little more than half of Instinct.

Perhaps to acknowledge (and appease) Niki & The Dove’s stateside followers, Sub Pop has made another Instinct track, “Tomorrow,” available for free download today. On the track, Dahlström sounds like the holy union of Kate Bush and Cyndi Lauper, backed by Karlöf’s best Prince (with a synth line that recalls Madonna’s “I’ll Remember.”)
