Late on Saturday night, Pet Shop Boys quietly debuted a new song and music video, “Invisible.” The surprise appearance has to qualify as the softest launch ever for the iconic synthpop duo, though I’d bet that Messrs. Tennant and Lowe would prefer the much more reserved “gentlest.” That description also applies to the song itself, which is not a banger by any measure.
A few more details have since emerged, like the title of the forthcoming album on which “Invisible” will appear. Due in September, Elysium is named for the paradisal afterlife in Greek mythology. Pet Shop Boys’ eleventh studio album was recorded in Los Angeles earlier this year and produced by the duo and Andrew Dawson, who tweeted this directive about “Invisible”: “Play it on a HUGE system, enjoy the BASS.”
Likewise, the visual accompaniment for “Invisible,” created by Los Angeles artist/filmmaker Brian Bress, calls for a bigger experience. True to the song’s title, the short film doesn’t feature Pet Shop Boys at all. Is that a first for the duo? I recall Lowe saying something about “Together”).
“Invisible” isn’t an official single, but was unveiled to “give an idea of the album’s sound,” according to the Pet Shop Boys’ website. Can’t wait to hear more, and hopefully very soon.
