The Wettest Wynter On Record

It took a nearly a year, but one of the best songs of summer 2011 (and indeed the entire year) is finally getting its day in the sun, thanks to a new music video.

Wynter Gordon‘s “Still Getting Younger” is the final single to be plucked from her criminally overlooked With The Music I Die EP (yes, one of the top EPs of 2011). “Still Getting Younger” remains my favorite track off the Queens, New York singer-songwriter’s abbreviated set (expanded in Australia). It’s a perfect slice of ’80s escapism that manages to be both breezy and bold, with bright synths, an urgent beat, and a great watery guitar sound.

Starting with a falling-star bit that sounds like Laura Branigan’s “Gloria,” the bonus is a chorus that includes an unmistakable nod to another retro-referencing number, Solange’s “Sandcastle Disco.” And this lyrical sentiment toward the end does me in every single time: “I love to hear you say my name / Calling out to me like a record / Promise me you’ll always be the same.”

The “Still Getting Younger” video, directed by Dan Eckman, is a nod to a favorite summertime activity, the water fight. From balloons to super-soakers, watch as Gordon and her beau aim to get each other wet on a city rooftop.
