“What have I done today? Just sat and watched the jets fly over. A car goes by and the sun goes down, we talk about the town.”
Some lyrics just stick with you, and so it goes with Flesh For Lulu’s “I Go Crazy,” which my internal jukebox seems to cue up whenever I’m feeling the slightest bit bored or have tackled next to nothing on my to-do list.
The London New Wavers’ song appeared on the soundtrack to John Hughes‘ 1987 film, Some Kind Of Wonderful, my favorite movie of all time (proving redheads rule, with twice the Ginger Power to boot). Some Kind Of Wonderful is basically Hughes’ gender reversal on his previous teen romance, Pretty In Pink, with one major change: the previously platonic outcast and best friend get together in the end. (Let’s hear it for Mary Stuart Masterson!)
“I Go Crazy” served as the first single from the Some Kind Of Wonderful soundtrack and never charted, which I also think made it the soundtrack’s only single. I couldn’t get enough of the song (and the soundtrack), obviously a minority appreciation in retrospect. I can’t believe 25 years have flown by since I first heard Flesh For Lulu’s Nick Marsh sing the words that have lingered in my head since. What have I done with all those days?
Please excuse the poor video quality of the embed. Clearly “I Go Crazy” also enjoys underground status among the YouTube crowd:
Purchase Flesh For Lulu – “I Go Crazy” via iTunes, Amazon MP3 (where the Some Kind Of Wonderful and Pretty In Pink soundtracks are just $2.99 right now).
