Ellie Goulding covers Active Child

Last Tuesday, Ellie Goulding posted a new track, “Hanging On,” to SoundCloud, tweeting, “Here’s the beginning of my new journey. Enjoy and share responsibly.”

At the time, Goulding gave no indication that the song was, in fact, an Active Child cover. She didn’t mention it, and the SoundCloud stream wasn’t tagged as such, an oversight that meant many of her fans and writers reporting the song’s release — myself included — mistakenly assumed it was an original composition from the British singer-songwriter. We were, however, largely on the same page regarding rapper Tinie Tempah’s involvement.

Followers of Active Child (aka Pat Grossi, pictured at right) were aware of the correct attribution, since he tweeted this that same day: “Incredibly proud moment for me as an artist, to have the amazing @elliegoulding cover one of my songs.” “Hanging On” appears on the New Jersey native and harp enthusiast’s 2011 debut, You Are All I See.

By the time the music video for Goulding’s cover premiered on Friday, credit to Active Child had been properly noted (for the record, she says they’re good friends). Here’s hoping Active Child garners some new fans from the attention given to Goulding, and that news spreads of the talented redhead.

While Goulding says her cover of “Hanging On” marks the start of a new journey, the path she’s followed thus far is still paying off, with her single, “Lights,” reaching a new #5 peak on the Billboard Hot 100 this week.

As I said last month after Goulding covered The Weeknd’s “High For This,” her label has to be planning a proper follow-up single to “Lights,” and her 2010 debut offers some very strong contenders. I expected Goulding to busy herself with additional covers in the interim, and that’s just what she’s done with “Hanging On.”
