Digital Daggers cover Tears For Fears

Among the highlights of the Tears For Fears concert I attended on Thursday night was hearing “Head Over Heels” live (video here), my favorite song from Songs From The Big Chair. It really would have been something if Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith had broken out the “Broken” outro following “Head Over Heels,” just like on the album. Next time around, fellas?

Several months ago, I came across a cover of “Head Over Heels” that I never featured here. Since I’ve previously featured others’ versions of the first and second singles from Songs From The Big Chair — “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” (Relient K) and “Shout” ([STRANGERS]) — today a two-year-old take on the album’s third single deservedly gets its due.

In 2010, Los Angeles duo Digital Daggers, who’d had success with placing their original songs on various television shows, tackled Tears For Fears’ “Head Over Heels” for The Vampire Diaries. In a China Shop interview last year, vocalist Andrea Wasse explained how she and musical partner Space came to cover the song, adding that their rendition received a very important stamp of approval:

“It was suggested to us by our publishers at EMI. Space was a big fan, so he jumped on it and put his spin on the track. It’s funny; a few die-hard Tears For Fears fans have been very honest about their dislike for our cover. Not too long ago I was introduced to Curt Smith and he told me we’d done a ‘lovely’ job with it. It felt pretty great hearing that from the guy who’s probably played it a million times.”

If you don’t mind a bit of ‘dark and foreboding’ now and again, and I most certainly do not, then you’ll likely agree with Smith that Digital Daggers have indeed done a lovely job with “Head Over Heels.”

Digital Daggers’ debut album, The Devil Within, was released last month.
