When I think about The Vaccines, I think of raucous, whiplash rock, likely because the London band’s 2011 debut single, “Wreckin’ Ball (La La La),” ran a Ramones’ efficient 84 seconds long.
But then I’m reminded that The Vaccines touted their influences thusly at the time: “’50s rock ‘n’ roll, ’60s garage and girl groups, ’70s punk, ’80s American hardcore, C86, and good pop music.” That patchwork quilt of sounds carried through to their debut album, What Did You Expect From The Vaccines?, but the release of a new free EP, Please, Please Do Not Disturb, finds the London band really delivering on the “good pop music” thread, covering ABBA’s “The Winner Takes It All.”
Framing frontman Justin Young’s gentle vocals, The Vaccines’ acoustic version of ABBA’s 1980 classic ballad is pure heartbreak, teardrops on a guitar.
In addition to “The Winner Takes It All,” the Please, Please Do Not Disturb EP features covers of Nick Lowe (“The Beast In Me”), Wire (“Mannequin”), and Jonathan Richman (“That Summer Feeling”). All were recorded by The Vaccines in various hotel rooms while on tour throughout Eastern Europe.
The band’s sophomore album, The Vaccines Come Of Age, produced by Ethan Johns (Kings Of Leon, Ryan Adams, Counting Crows), is out September 4.
