On Tuesday, Pet Shop Boys released a digital EP of remixes for “Winner,” the first single from the synthpop duo’s 11th studio album, Elysium.
Co-producer Andrew Dawson contributes a pair of remixes to the release. On his fittingly titled HappyHour Remix, Dawson recasts the ceremonial march of the original “Winner,” turning up the tempo and giving the track a buzzing melodic makeover to compete with current mainstream pop club remixes.
For Dawson’s Extended HappySad Remix — Pet Shop Boys originally considered titling the album HappySad — he delves into ambient textures. Dawson’s atmospheric and moving production, underscored by orchestral touches, reminds me of William Orbit’s work. I absolutely prefer it to the album version of “Winner.”
For the other two mixes on the “Winner” Remixes EP, Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe set their sights on Sweden. John Dahlbäck delivers a dubby, raved-up mix that will do well in tech-house circles, while Niki & The Dove constructs something quite different and noteworthy.
Malin Dahlström and Gustaf Karlöf’s production is like one of those classic tall ships, navigating tricky waters toward new, unexplored worlds. The seas may be choppy and the weather unpredictable (tribal drums, squelching synths, cut-and-paste vocals), but the craft and masts are built sturdy and strong (muscular rhythmic support) with Dahlstrom’s additional vocal line (shades of Kate Bush) serving as a siren call. Together, we’ll weather the storm and come out winners.
