Club-going gays of a certain age will recognize the song that British producer BURNS has lifted for his new single, “Lies.”

In late 1998 into the start of 1999, Deborah Cox had a multi-format hit with “Nobody’s Supposed To Be Here.” The single went platinum and spent eight weeks at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100, locked out of the top spot by R. Kelly & Celine Dion’s “I’m Your Angel” and Brandy’s “Have You Ever.” On the R&B chart, “Nobody’s Supposed To Be Here” spent a then-record 14 weeks at #1.

However, Cox’s follow-up single, “It’s Over Now,” released the following spring, didn’t even crack the top 40, peaking at #70. On the R&B chart, it was all over at #20. There was much better news on the Billboard Dance chart, where “It’s Over Now” spent two weeks at #1, besting “Nobody’s Supposed To Be Here” by a week. I still prefer “It’s Over Now” to its bigger sister, probably because I can vividly recall exactly where I was when I first heard the Hex Hector Club Mix — on a small, nearly deserted dancefloor in the back of a Chicago bar.

Thirteen years and a skip across the pond later, London-based BURNS has brought “It’s Over Now” back to life with “Lies.” I don’t know who has re-sung Cox’s vocals for BURNS’ track, but they’re not far from Florence Welch (particularly her cover of Candi Staton’s “You Got The Love”). Listen to the original version of “Lies,” if you like, but the truth is that the Acrobat Remix is even better (and it’s a free download).

BURNS, who contributed to Kelis’ Flesh Tone and is rumored to be working with Rihanna, will release a “Lies” single on September 17, featuring additional remixes by Otto Knows, Skream, and Tiga.
