The Past Is A Present For Azealia Banks

September 10, 2012 0 Comments

Azealia Banks‘ debut EP, 1991, is named for the year she was born, but the way the Harlem rapper-singer works the ’90s vibes in her new music video for the title track — including the house beat underneath — her infancy must have involved some serious osmosis.

In the clip, directed by Justin Mitchell (Kid Cudi, Jenny Lewis), Banks cops to channeling Madonna, Crystal Waters, and Aaliyah, paying homage to what really was a golden era of music-video making. Striking a pose and giving good face (and a few hilarious ones toward the end), “1991” should be Banks’ ticket to the big leagues.

Calling all artists and labels: Rather than ringing Nicki Minaj or Pitbull for yet another guest rap, why not contact Banks for a few fresh features?
