As the face of H&M’s fall campaign, Lana Del Rey stars in the fast-fashion retailer’s television commercial to promote the collection. And since singing is Del Rey’s day job, lest we forget, she’s covered Bobby Vinton’s 1963 #1 hit, “Blue Velvet” for the spot.
The song choice makes absolute sense considering the commercial pays homage to David Lynch, the director who made Vinton’s song a centerpiece of his 1986 film of the same name, starring Kyle McLachlan, Isabella Rosellini, and Dennis Hopper. (That I convinced my family to rent Blue Velvet and watch along with me remains amazing today.)
As seen below, the H&M commercial starring Del Rey is so seeped in Lynchian imagery, I thought that the master himself might have orchestrated the whole thing. But no, it’s the work of Johan Renck, a Swedish director who’s no stranger to oddities himself (see Madonna’s “Nothing Really Matters” and Robbie Williams’ “She’s Madonna.”)
As Lynch’s work has never really been mainstream — Twin Peaks being one very brief exception — how it’s all meant to sell clothing to the masses escapes me. But if Mr. Blue Velvet was casting a new muse today, pop’s noir princess Lana Del Rey would be a match made in heaven.
Released as a standalone single today, “Blue Velvet” will also appear on Born To Die – The Paradise Edition, an expanded version of Del Rey’s debut album (one of 2012’s best), coming November 13.
Penguin Prison has remixed “Blue Velvet,” which you can listen to below. Chris Glover’s rework will be included on a remix CD included in the deluxe box set of The Paradise Edition.
